« The preparation of human embryonic cell strains is made from aborted human embryos. At the time of the first human cell cultures, Sweden was one of the only countries to allow abortion. So it was in a Swedish hospital that an aborted human fetus was collected. The organs of this fetus have been frozen in liquid nitrogen to ensure its conservation for many years. The WI38 cell culture strain is a diploid strain isolated at the Philadelphia Wistar Institute from the lung fibroblasts (support tissue cells) of this fetus. The MRC5 strain is another embryonic strain of diploid cells, it also comes from pulmonary tissue fibroblasts of an aborted human fetus. These diploid embryonic cells divide more times than primary culture cells, but they eventually age and have to be renewed.
A continuous cell line consists of cells capable of dividing indefinitely. These can be selected from various cancer tissues. But they can also be taken from healthy and rendered tissue. « immortal » by the action of viral agents or chemical agents. In addition to their unlimited growth capacity, these initially healthy cells have acquired characteristics similar to those of cancer cells, such as that of containing chromosomal aberrations. The continuous cell line is actually a cancerous cell line.
